Talk on Obesity and its management at Lions Club of Surat North

On the occasion of World Anti-Obesity day, Wings Bariatrics Team was invited for guest talk on Obesity. It was a wonderful organisation by the Lions Club of Surat North, President Mr. Hemant Panwala, Sec- Mr.Jagdish Fitter and their team. Around 100 people audience was there for the talk. Rajasthan Patrika is Hindi National Newspaper which covered our nLIGHTEN club inaugural meet which was on 11th May 2014. It writes about the World Health Organisation ( W.H.O ) statement on obesity, which states that by year 2020 more people will dying of Obesity rather than hunger. It also writes about the growing influence of fast food culture and thus increasing the obesity rates in India. 1st Obesity Patient support club "nLIGHTEN" in south gujarat meeting was duely covered by the press. The intention is to invite patients to share their doubts, difficulties and experience in dealing with their weight in day to day life. The patient are nlighted about the hazards of obesity and are encouraged and motivated to fight this menace. We had 11 families of our patients, 2 patients operated at Indore and one in Mumbai. Gujarat Guardian is one of the Gujarati leading newspaper which carried our nLIGHTEN group's news. It says that as now the Govt of India too have recognized, Bariatric surgery not only reduces weight but also is helpful in diabetes, blood pressure control. Thus its is now covered in CGHS scheme for central govt employees. Childhood Obesity - A clear and Present Danger

Our children are gaining weight at enormous pace. This is what a latest research done in Mumbai school says. The cause is obviously the life style change and the diet we are providing to our kinds. These obese children will become obese adults. The dreaded diseases associated with obesity like Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension will hit them earlier. Its high time for parents to take notice. How to solve this problem? Its actually not very difficult. These are some simple measure suggested : . Children should have at least four hours of rigorous physical activity (swimming, cycling, cricket, jogging etc) in a week . Avoid eating out more than twice to thrice a week . Parents should follow the ‘Asian healthy eating pyramid’ which prescribes six servings of fruits and vegetables per day, followed by cereals and pulses, milk and milk products with the least emphasis on fats and sweets
