New Obesity Guidelines in India

Alarmed by reports that India will become the global diabetes capital by 2050, the Health Ministry has reduced the diagnostic cut-offs for body mass index (BMI) to 23 kg/m2 and the standard waist circumference to fight the battle against obesity. The standards have been set for the first time in the Ministry's consensus guidelines for Prevention and Management of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome for the country, released on Tuesday. The BMI—considered the individual's fitness and obesity indicator—is the ratio of the body weight in kg versus height in m2. The country's new diagnostic cut-off for the body mass index is 23 kg/m2 as opposed to 25 kg/m2 globally. The guidelines were released jointly by the Health Ministry, the Diabetes Foundation of India, the All-India Institute of Medical Science (Aiims), Indian Council of Medical Research, the National Institute of Nutrition and 20 other health organisations. A person with a body mass index of 23 kg/m2 will now be considered o

Use incentives, not force

Hello Friends . This article is in regards to recent ruling that all mbbs doctors passing out should compulsorily do a one year stint after the mandatory one internship. That makes MBBS in India to 6 and half year. Not only the doctors are fuming even the press is against this decision. TIMES VIEW If the health ministry has its way, all MBBS graduates in India will have to work for a year in rural areas to be eligible to apply for a postgraduate degree in the country. This proposal is not new. It did the rounds last year and was shelved following protests from students of medicine. Soon after, the health minister proposed to make the MBBS course a six-and-a-half years affair including a one-year compulsory rural posting. That too was cried down. So the good minister has revived his original plan now. It will however have to be passed by the Medical Council of India before it can be enforced. There is no denying that there is a shortage of doctors staffing rural clinics and hospital

How to protect your PC

Basic security Turn off your computer when not using it, especially if you have an ‘always on’ connection Get a firewall if you have DSL or cable modem Use a good anti-virus program. Use only one, as different programs use the same system resources and may conflict Turn off file and print sharing Hackers count on the public being uninformed and use that lack of knowledge to gain access. Visit sites run by your OS manufacturer to stay updated on security Specific measures Don’t visit chat rooms unless they are closed and you know the room administrator Almost never open an attachment that ends in .DLL or .EXE, even if the e-mail is from your best friend. The only time you can open such an attachment is if you know exactly what’s in it To outwit script-based viruses, ask an expert how you can open scripts in Notepad (or Wordpad). Then get someone who knows about Visual Basic to look at it before running it Keep data private through encryption If you’re not surfing and you see your modem

How to secure your computer from hackers

HOW HACKERS WORK Getting the IP address Every computer has an IP (Internet Protocol) address. A DSL or cable modem connection keeps the IP address ‘always on’. A dial-up account’s IP address is turned off by the Internet Service Provider after a certain amount of inactivity Dial-up accounts get a different IP address each time they are on. So a hacker can’t make repeat visits unless he loads a program on your PC to tell him when you are on-line and gives the current IP address. A hacker can take his time to get to know an ‘always on’ connection and its weaknesses Common methods for finding your IP address are through chat rooms, looking up domain names on a domain name registrar site, or running programs that can create a log of all valid addresses In a chatroom, all a hacker has to do is right click on your chat ID and get your IP address. A domain registrar can yield a lot of information, including a website’s employee names, phone numbers, fax numbers, physical addresses and IP addr

Light Source

Hi friends. I wish to write today on selecting a good light source. Basically there two kinds of it Halogen Xenon A. Halogen: This is cheaper compared to Xenon. It gives a yellow light. Some manufacturers also make a white light Halogen light source. Advantage: Cheaper The bulp lasts long Bulb change is cheaper too. Disadvange: The main disadvantage of halogen light source is that, in case of bleeding, red color of blood absorbs light and thus visibility due to decreased light to a great extent. For this particular reason, it can be used for basic laparoscopic procedure only. B. Xenon: This Light source gives white light. Advantage: Gives almost natural vision. Must for advanced surgical procedures. . Disadvantages Apart from initial Costs, bulb is costly too. The life of bulp is shorter compared to halogen bulbs

Insufflators

Insufflators There are various brands available in market, Indian as well as Foreign. Well, the most commonly used one in Karl storz. They are pricey but are very effective compared to Indian some of the indian products. I have used few Local products, but sometimes they do cause problems. The most common difficulty I faced is they can lead to subcutaneous emphysema. There can be other reasons for this particular problem, like the port is place in subcutaneous region.

Laparoscopy Set-up - Camera

I would like to discuss the basics first before starting in detail about the laparoscopy procedures. So today i will discuss little about what is an ideal or atleast a desired setup for a Advanced Laparoscopic Opertion theatre. Today we discuss about Camera Camera : An Ideal camera for advanced Minimal access surgery is a 3 chip camera. There are many brands available in market like Karl Storz, Maxer, Olympus, B Braun, Stryker. Among these I have used Storz, Maxer and Stryker. According to me, the best images among these three 3 Chip cameras , were in Stryker, Storz and Maxer. Stryker was also the cheaper than Storz. It was also earlier to launch HD ( High Defination) camera, which is much superior than the 3 chip camera. Karl Storz has too recently lauched the HD version, which although very costly (About 20 lacs) but gives the best image till date. If cost is not a problem, I believe Storz HD is the best camera today. Strykar company also sells a package of all setup of camera with
