Be happy and Stop Chasing the Wrong Priorities

By Kelly Goldsmith and Marshall Goldsmith I’ve spent a lot of time studying what makes people happy, successful leaders. But some of the best suggestions I can think of came out of a study of a bunch of elderly retirees, who, as far as I know, never had been CEOs.  A friend of mine had interviewed this group about what advice they’d give to younger people. What, they were asked, is the key to having a great life? Their answers were both simple and wise so I’ll summarize here. Then I will explain what applicability I think they have to your careers. 1. Be happy now.  Not next week, not next month, not next year. Now. The great Western disease we are spreading around the world is “I’ll be happy when.” When I get that BMW, when I get that new house, when I get that status. Americans are among the luckiest people in the history of the world. Don’t get so wrapped up looking at what you don’t have that you miss that, what you do have. 2. Appreciate your friends and family....

10 Tips from Happy People

1. Don't Be Happy What are the downsides of happiness? For one thing, happier people are more prone to prejudicial behavior [source: Holt]. One possible explanation is that a contented, lackadaisical or happy attitude allows people to easily turn to stereotypes or other caricatures when making judgments. Happy people also can have excessively high self-regard -- to the point where they think that their thoughts or actions can control events clearly beyond their control. Similarly, concerns have been voiced that happy people may be easier to manipulate, particularly by unscrupulous political leaders. But happier people show higher levels of political involvement. Happy people generally live longer, but one study found that "cheerful and optimistic" U.S. children actually did not live as long as others, so draw your own conclusions [source: Holt]. There are other reasons not to reach for happiness at all costs. A blind pursuit of happiness may neglect some complicated eff...

How To Train Yourself To Be In The Mood You Want

One of the good article I came across on the net. Please mail me your comments. When you have major changes going on in your life, or you’re just frustrated about where you are, it’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of depression, bad moods and frustration. I know, I’ve been there … and when I’m not careful, I still get there more than I want to. But lately I’ve had a particularly hard time, as I make some major (positive) changes in my life. I hit these moments where I’m in a foul mood, or I’m just feeling paralyzed, and I’m just stuck. Sometimes I just stew in that and stay there, but sometimes I actually get intelligent and pull my way out of it. I’m going to outline the framework that I’ve been using over the last 30 days to really get myself resourceful and motivated (and in a better mood) when I’m feeling stuck. Hopefully it will help you, too, and if you do I truly hope you’ll share it with others. First Up: Using A Framework to Escape From Paralyzing Emotions When we feel...

10 Tips from Happy People - Part 2

5. Spend Time in Nature Nature Withdrawal The absence of biophilia may be found in a theory called nature-deficit disorder , first proposed in a book by Richard Louv, who says that a lack of physical contact with nature harms children. Louv argues that sensationalist stories and technology have pushed children away from nature. His book, "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder," also maintains that children who are exposed to nature, particularly from a young age, do better than their peers. They're less stressed and learn to think creatively. Playing in nature allows them to be active and may represent an important tool in fighting childhood obesity. Many people would claim to have an instinctive attraction to nature and a desire to preserve it. We want to protect the rain forests, clean up pollution, and if possible, live by the sea or a nice park. And despite much of the world's population living in urban areas...
